Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks; One chopped himself in halves and then there were Six. How is each “beyond the law”? Everyone deciding to stick together and be careful – but never including the servants in it. Anyways, those were small issues and I really enjoyed the book in general!

However, the books worst failing is that they have nothing serious to say about the powerful themes that are at the very heart of the story. Before the first night is over, things starts escalating very quickly and they all find themselves face to face with death.

Of course, when only 2 or 3 people had been murdered, no one would think to use the radio to call for help, so that’s why the Captain only decides to do this now. On the other hand, is eye-for-an-eye the best way to get even?

The story revolves around ten strangers who all get vague invitations to come and spend some time in an island. If you suspect who is the author this plan is probably that you’re right, but also the “clues” can confusing and make a fool of you. Ten strangers are enticed to a semi-remote British island home for what appears to be a social vacation only to find there is a far more nefarious purpose behind the vague and deceptive invitations.

The story is best read as a classic example of a style of British mystery that was once very popular. Insisting cgristie chivalry when a woman could be the murderer just as well as a man view spoiler [this viewing of women as shrinking violets was what cost Philip Lombard his life in the end!


Information from my copy of the book. The story was simply carved, the murderer quite predictable being the only one with a strong motive.

I’ve read better mysteries in a cook book. Oddly, they too have never met their employers and are carrying out instructions that were mailed to them when their services were retained. Even someone as myself who reads a fair number of mysteries was left captivated as to whodunit, allowing me to read quickly until the end of the book.
